DFI PS83-BL (i865PE) Mainboard

 Comment

This is a typical budget board that realizes the chipset's minimal functionality.

Accessories:

  • Package of an effective design;
  • Documentation: user manual in 5 languages;
  • Cables: one Serial ATA (without power supply adapter), one ATA66/100/133 and FDD;
  • Bracket with 2 USB ports;
  • CD with:
    • drivers;
    • user guide in PDF;
    • Adobe Acrobat Reader;
    • Award WinFlash 1.54;
    • RadarSync;
    • McAfee VirusScan Online;
    • Winbond Hardware Doctor.

The board's width causes some downsides in the PCB's layout: the IDE connectors are behind the PCI slots, and the audio ones are in front of them. A video card inserted may lock memory modules. Also, it can be difficult to reach some jumpers when the board is already installed. Their description is provided on the PCB.

The 3-phase switching voltage regulator incorporates 12 capacitors of 1500 uF. There are also voltage regulators of the AGP bus (2 capacitors of 1000 uF and several less capacious) and of the memory (2 of 1000 uF).

Integrated controllers:

  • audio controller based on the chipset and C-Media CMI9739A AC'97 codec; 5.1 audio system supported, front audio outputs and S/PDIF connectors provided;
  • network controller based on the Realtek RTL8101L chip supporting 10/100Base-T  (Fast Ethernet).

+2.5 V supplied to the memory modules in the StandBy mode is indicated with the red LED.

A connector for the second COM port wasn't integrated though the space for  it is left.

System monitoring is supported by Winbond W83627HF-AW chip. It controls:

  • processor, AGP bus voltages, +3.3, +5 and +-12 V, VBAT and +5 V Standby
  • rotation speed of 3 fans;
  • temperatures of the processor (built-in sensor) and the board (built-in sensor)

There are 2 connectors for regulated and 1 for unregulated connection of fans.

Summary: memory slots - 4 DDR SDRAM; expansion slots - AGP/ 5 PCI; I/O ports - 2 COM/ LPT/ 2 PS/2/ 8 USB 2.0; dimensions - 305x210 mm.

Settings:

jumpers and switches CMOS clear jumper
Jumpers setting the basic CPU clock Auto, 100/133/166/200 MHz
BIOS based on the Phoenix AwardBIOS 6.00PG Setup of memory timings + CAS Latency, RAS Precharge, RAS to CAS Delay, Active to Precharge Delay
Setup of memory frequency + Auto, 266, 320, 400 MHz (with FSB 800 MHz)
Setup of AGP bus -
Setup of PCI bus -
AGP/PCI frequency setup + AGP(PCIx2) = Auto, 66-76 MHz in 0.6-0.7 MHz steps
PCI IRQ manual assignment +
FSB frequency setup + 100-255 MHz in 1MHz steps
CPU clock ratio + x8-x50
CPU voltage control + Default, +5%, +10%
DIMM voltage control + 2.5-2.9 V in 0.1V steps
NB voltage control -
AGP voltage control -

We used the BIOS of 31.03.03 as the latest available version.

This board can't boast of its functionality or overclocking capabilities, but its speed is equal to most its competitors, and the price is promised to be low.
