Custom Palit HD 4850 For Less Than 160 USD

Discuss in our forum  ·  Leave a comment

Referring to Chinese GPUFans, the source published photos of an HD 4850 card that is being prepared for release by Palit.

The solution is interesting because it doesn't copy the reference design introduced a month ago. As you can see on images below, TV-Out is replaced by HDMI. Also note the dual-slot width of the back plate.

According to the source, Palit has not yet decided on a cooling solution. As you remember, a custom cooler has also been used in PowerColor's HD 4850 2GB.

Palit HD 4850 is claimed to be priced about 142-157 USD.

Microsoft Announces DirectX 11 API

Discuss in our forum  ·  Leave a comment

At GameFest 2008 in Seattle, Microsoft made a rather interesting and expected announcement of DirectX 11 API that is said to be fully compatible with the current DirectX 10.

So, what might gamers expect from transition to the new API? According to the sources, developers call DirectX 11 a kind of a bugfix of DirectX 10, its more advanced version.

Microsoft plans to make DirectX 11 as simple as possible for game developers, and calls it a long step towards perfecting of gameplay. The new API has the following innovations compared to DirectX 10:

  • Complete support (including hardware capabilities) by Windows Vista and future OSes (but not Windows XP);
  • Compatibility with hardware supporting DirectX 10 and 10.1;
  • New shader technology that allows using GPU not only as a 3D processor, but also as a massively parallel processor;
  • Better support for multi-core configurations;
  • Support for curved surface tesselation to negate differences between pre-rendered high-resolution graphics and real-time graphics.

Microsoft plans to finish the DirectX 11 development by late 2008 / early 2009. And games supporting new API should be expected late next year.

Optimus Pultius, a Younger Brother of the Famous Keyboard

Discuss in our forum  ·  Leave a comment

As we all remember, the interest towards Optimus Maximus keyboard nearly ceased after its release. All willing purchased that original OLED-key solution. And the rest, having got to know everything they wanted, turned to other innovations.

Naturally, that couldn't please the creators of Maximus, so now there's another concept keyboard to be released late this or early next year.

Optimus Pultius is an add-on unit of 15 OLED keys that can be used with any usual keyboard.

While no pricing information is available at the moment, we doubt this novelty will be cheap — as you remember, a Maximus keyboard featuring 10 OLED keys cost 599 USD.

ATI and NVIDIA Accused of Collusion

Discuss in our forum  ·  Leave a comment

A class suit was filed against NVIDIA and ATI (now AMD). According to it, about 5 years ago the aforementioned companies colluded to fix prices. In particular, there's an email in case records proving that such cartel deals were a usual thing in the graphics card market.

In other words, NVIDIA and ATI, perhaps, coordinated their actions to make a semblance of competition — at secret meetings representatives of both companies negotiated price levels, release dates and other actions. Such pseudo competition allowed them to increase sales and revenues, acting as a single monopolist.

Images show clearly how behavior of NVIDIA and ATI changed with time. The upper chart shows price difference between comparable cards. The lower chart shows the difference in release dates. The first area on both charts is Pre-conspiracy, the second is Conspiracy, the third (a very brief period) is Post-DOJ Subpoena.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

In sum, suits (that were merged into one) were filed by 51 parties. Moreover, it was discovered that collusion also took place in DRAM, flat panel and CRT markets as well.
